Freelancing
Freelancing in Pakistan: How to Start, and How to Make It Last
Starting is the easy part. Most freelancers in Pakistan who give up do it in the second year, and usually for reasons that have little to do with skill.
To start freelancing in Pakistan, pick one skill that clients already pay for, build three or four portfolio samples, open a profile on one marketplace such as Upwork or Fiverr, and set up a way to receive foreign payments before your first job. To make it last, register for tax, keep a cash buffer of a few months, price on the value you deliver rather than on local living costs, and work from somewhere with reliable internet and backup power.
Pakistan has one of the largest freelance workforces in the world, and Lahore is one of its centres. That scale cuts both ways: plenty of people have done this successfully, and plenty of people are competing for the same first job you want. This guide is the order of operations that tends to work, with links to the deeper pieces we have written on each step.
1. Pick one skill, not five
Marketplaces reward specificity. A profile that says "web developer, designer, video editor and content writer" loses to a profile that says "Shopify stores for clothing brands". Buyers search for a problem, not for a generalist.
The skills commonly sold from Pakistan include web and app development, graphic and UI design, video editing, writing, digital marketing and virtual assistance. Choose the one where you can already produce work someone would pay for, and narrow it further by industry or platform once you see where the demand is.
2. Build proof before you build profiles
A new profile with no history has one thing to sell: samples. Before you open an account, make three or four pieces that look like real client work in your chosen niche. A redesign of a local business's website, a sample campaign, a short edited reel — anything a buyer can open in under a minute and judge.
Quality matters more than quantity here. Three convincing samples beat twelve average ones, because a buyer skimming proposals decides in seconds.
3. Choose a starting platform
- Upwork works on proposals: clients post jobs and freelancers apply. It suits longer projects and ongoing contracts, and submitting proposals uses paid credits, so applying to everything gets expensive.
- Fiverr works on listings: you publish a fixed service and buyers find you. It suits well-defined, repeatable work and rewards a tightly described offer.
- Direct clients through LinkedIn, referrals and past employers carry no platform fee, but you handle contracts and collections yourself.
Both marketplaces charge fees and change them from time to time, so check their current fee pages rather than relying on a figure from a forum. Most people start on one platform, get a few reviews, and add a second channel once the first is working.
4. Sort out payment before the first job
The worst time to discover your payment route does not work is the day a client wants to pay you. Decide in advance how money reaches a Pakistani bank account, what each step costs, and how long it takes. We compared the routes in detail in Getting Paid From Pakistan Without Losing Half of It.
5. Price on value, not on cost of living
The fastest way to stay stuck is to underprice because rent in Lahore is lower than rent in London. Clients abroad compare you to their alternatives, not to your expenses, and very cheap rates tend to attract the clients who are hardest to work with. How to Set a Rate When You Are Bidding From Pakistan walks through it.
6. Register for tax early
Freelance income is taxable in Pakistan. Registering as a filer with the Federal Board of Revenue through its IRIS portal (iris.fbr.gov.pk) is the usual first step, and being a filer generally lowers the tax deducted on many transactions.
IT and IT-enabled service exporters who register with the Pakistan Software Export Board — whose website now redirects to Tech Destination Pakistan — have historically qualified for a reduced rate on export income. Rates and conditions change with each federal budget, so confirm the current rules with FBR or a tax adviser before you rely on any number.
7. Plan for the second year
The problems that end freelance careers are rarely about talent:
- Uneven income. One good month is followed by a slow one. A buffer of two or three months of expenses turns a slow month into an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
- One client too many eggs. If a single client is most of your income, their decision becomes your emergency.
- Working overseas hours. Evenings and nights on US or UK time wear people down. Scheduling client calls across time zones and looking after yourself on late hours help.
- Isolation. Months of working alone from a bedroom affect motivation more than most people expect.
8. Where you work decides whether you can deliver
In Lahore, two things end more client calls than anything else: load-shedding and unstable internet. If you work from home, keep your LESCO schedule to hand — here is how to check it — and put the router and laptop on a UPS. What is actually worth buying for remote work covers the rest.
When home stops working, a coworking desk is the other option: fibre internet, backup power and a quiet place to take calls, for a fixed monthly price.
Questions people ask
Is freelancing legal in Pakistan?
Yes. Freelancing is legal in Pakistan, and the income is taxable like any other income. Registering as a filer with FBR is the usual first step.
Is Upwork or Fiverr better for beginners in Pakistan?
It depends on the work. Fiverr suits a clearly defined, repeatable service that buyers can find and order. Upwork suits project and contract work where you apply to jobs, and proposals cost paid credits. Many freelancers start on one and add the other once they have reviews.
Do freelancers in Pakistan have to pay tax?
Yes, freelance income is taxable. IT and IT-enabled service exporters registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board have historically had a reduced rate on export income, but rates change with each budget, so confirm current rules with FBR or a tax adviser.
How long does it take to get the first freelance order?
There is no reliable timeline. It depends on the niche, the strength of your samples and how tightly your offer is described. Treat the first few months as building proof rather than income.
What do I need to freelance reliably from Lahore?
A stable internet connection, backup power for load-shedding, a quiet place to take calls, and a working payment route to a Pakistani bank account.
